Chaplains

Morris Key Senior Chaplain - Level II CPE Supervisor

As Centre Director for Pastoral Education based at Westmead Hospital, I am responsible for conducting Clinical Pastoral Education Programs at Introductory Level (40 hours); Basic level (400 hours) and Advanced level (400 hours). I am also the Director of another CPE Centre at The Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Camperdown, Sydney.

The introductory CPE course is suitable for lay people, theological students and clergy wanting an orientation into the Hospital Environment and also insights into the needs and vulnerability of the hospital patients and their families. This course may be available over one intensive 40 hour week or one day a week over 5 weeks depending on demand and availability of CPE Supervisors. The outcomes of this course will hopefully help people to be more aware of their listening and responding skills, the understanding of the power of empathy, a better understanding of the needs of hospital patients and the opportunity to explore and to study a case study (verbatim) of a visit to a patient by a chaplain or CPE trainee. Students will also be introduced to theological reflection, spiritual assessment and pastoral care models during this course.

The Basic CPE unit usually is conducted over 27 - 30 weeks however some courses can be completed over 20 weeks depending on whether school holidays are factored in or not. CPE is an accredited course for most professional hospital, mental health and corrective service chaplains. An Advanced CPE Unit usually accepts candidates after an interview and suitability is assessed. (Usually at least 2 Basic CPE Units will have already been completed). CPE Units are recognised as accredited courses for academic credit for diploma, advanced diploma, Bachelor and Master of Arts level degrees. A Master of Arts degree with a major in Chaplaincy (3 units of CPE) is available through the NSW College of CPE accredited with the Sydney College of Divinity.

Robert Tsai Westmead General Hospital

Robert's background was in Architecture and Teaching before becoming an ordained Presbyterian Minister. He has been in Parish ministry with twenty years experience and was Director of Christian Education before joining Prebyterian Social Services in Hospital Chaplaincy. He has since undertaken training in Chaplaincy through Clinical Pastoral Education.

While in the parish, he considered the personal face to face contact through pastoral visitation as a vital part of getting to know people and to be known. Robert believes in bringing back the old fashion art of conversation through listening with a good bed-side manner. Chaplaincy is providing personal secure space, holding the emotions and faith of the patient during a time of need and change.

Ev Sims Royal North Shore Hospital / St Vincent's Hospital

As Presbyterian Chaplain at Royal North Shore Hospital (RNSH) I enjoy visiting a wide range of patients, from tiny premature babies to lonely elderly folk, from young fathers coming to terms with spinal injuries to others struggling with mental and emotional illness. Many face major operations and others the knowledge that their illness is terminal. Family members suffer alongside them and it is amazing to see so many respond to the opportunity to talk and pray about their pain and anxieties. Some of those I have ministered to have come to a new and living faith in Christ which emphasises the value of this ministry.

Of a Sunday I take my turn at the RNSH Chapel to lead a service and though the numbers are not huge it gives a wonderful opportunity to point people to Jesus at a time of real pain. What a privilege!

For the last two and a half years I have spent two days a week at St Vincents Hospital in Darlinghurst. The Public and Private Hospitals take Chaplaincy very seriously as part of the whole care of the patient and include a Hospice for the special needs of the terminally ill.

Hospital Chaplaincy is 'coal face ' ministry where we meet a cross section of society, many of whom would never darken the doors of a church but faced with serious questions of life and their own vulnerability readily talk about their needs and concerns.

Pray that I might be fresh in my own walk with Jesus day by day and sensitive to how He wants me to minister to each individual.

Rhonda Daley Westmead Children's Hospital (CHW) / Allowah Presbyterian Children's Hospital

Eight years ago as a preschool teacher I was mentored by our minister in hospital visiting. I then tested the water as a volunteer one day per week at CHW. By God's grace I have now had the privilege of providing pastoral care to children, families and staff full time. I revel in this ministry, sustained by God's love and guided by His Spirit.

To ensure a thoroughly gospel basis for this ministry I have been studying part time at the Presbyterian Theological College and hope to complete the Diploma of Diaconal Studies and B Min in 2007.

Babysitting my grandchildren helps keep me sane and my church family at Granville actively encourages and supports me.

Please pray for the children and all who care for them at both hospitals and for God's ongoing grace for this challenging and rewarding work.

Margaret Robertson Westmead Children's Hospital (CHW)

For many years while teaching I sensed God's call on my life to be involved in further ministry. My passion was not dampened despite lack of encouragement from some quarters.

As I walked alongside several family members and friends who suffered severe illness and death, I found the Lord gave me resources I did not know I possessed. After retiring from teaching I undertook study for a B.Min. including CPE. I found myself ministering in an area I had not previously considered. I am humbled to be the Lord's servant ministering His love, grace, comfort, and assurance to patients and family in hospital at Royal North Shore.

To quote from Bill Hybels, "We've never locked eyes with anyone who doesn't matter to the Father." When I lock eyes and listen pastorally, I pray that those who cross my path will experience a closer relationship with the Good Shepherd.

Margaret Robertson has recently transferred her Chaplaincy ministry to the Westmead Children's Hospital where she currently works two days per week.

Christine Mao Prince of Wales Hospital

"I completed a Master of Divinity at the end of 2007 through the Sydney and Missionary Bible College. Prior to studying full-time at SMBC I worked as a social worker at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for 4 years. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in this field and felt it would be a good balance to draw upon my training both as a social worker and the equipping at bible college to serve as a hospital chaplain. I regard it a great privilege to work in an environment where people are hurting and vulnerable and to walk alongside them at this time is something I do not take for granted. I am currently working one day a week at the Prince of Wales Hospital."
Parklea Correctional Centre - Prison Chaplaincy

Currently the PSS has a full time Presbyterian Chaplain working at Parklea Correctional Centre. On the Parklea site are located three prisons in which our Chaplain carries out his ministry. This represents an approximate total of 900 inmates.

This work seeks to enrich the lives of staff and inmates through the ministry of the Word. It finds its biblical principle in Hebrews 13:3 that exhorts Christians to "remember those in prison as if you were their fellow prisoners..." and most importantly in Luke 19:10 where Jesus speaks about his mission "to seek and save what was lost"

Our Chaplain is involved in conducting church services, providing bible studies, faith based living courses and individual pastoral care for both staff and inmates which at times includes their family members.

This work is performed within a multi disciplinary team that includes other correctional centre staff and chaplains.

Please pray that he would have much Godly wisdom as he deals particularly with inmates. And that the ministry of the Word would accomplish great things in people's lives bringing them to God's forgiveness, love and new life that is found in Christ.

For more information regarding this ministry or if you wish to speak to the Chaplain at Parklea Correctional Centre you can contact him directly on 9678 4194.
